Today, it also offers Nile cruises and some of the world's best scuba diving, notably at the coral reefs near Hurghada on the Red Sea. In the 1990s, however, the industry went into sharp decline. Islamic fundamentalists began attacking Western tourists. Their aim was to pressure the government into moving the state more toward Islam. The result has been a sharp decline in the number of visitors, from 3.2 million in 1992 to 2.6 million in 1993, and a major dent in foreign exchange earnings. The business convention trade has been particularly affected.
